Marine Lab LED Retrofit- XHF029

Classroom at Telonicher Marine Lab
Project Description:
In Spring 2017 Toni Castillo proposed to upgrade the Telonicher Marine Lab with modern, energy efficient LEDs. At the time, this was Cal Poly Humboldt’s most energy intensive building and this project came out of an initial audit performed by the Redwood Coast Energy Authority on October 28, 2016. The Idea Paper was approved by the committee on March 6, 2017 and then moved into development in Fall 2017. At the end of the semester, the developed project was approved to move forward with a budget cap of $120,000. At that time, the Committee was unsure of scope and final project estimates, but directed staff to truth and finalize the proposed student scope of work. The project then went to design with Frontier, which completed and permitted the project on November 29, 2021.  Implementation began on July 26, 2022 and was installed by internal Facilities Management staff on/around Dec 9, 2022. This project included the removal of existing ballasts at the locations of existing T8 fluorescent lamps and the replacement of the existing T8 fluorescent lamps with new T8 LED lamps with the goal of decreased power and energy consumption. Exterior luminaires were replaced as intended by the permitted plans. Facilities Management provided all ancillary work required to complete the scope of the work. The total cost of the project was billed at $22,870.18 on September 30, 2022 and saved $97,129.82 that was reallocated to other HEIF lighting upgrades/retrofits that had deficits in funding. This project saves 70,902.11 kWh and $15,438.93 yearly for the University.
