IT Server Virtualization

Project Description:

In Spring 2010, HEIF received a proposal to “virtualize” 40 of Humboldt’s computer servers into four newer ones. Rapid advances in computer technology enables this consolidation, and for HEIF the new machines’ increased efficiency and fewer total number results in a net savings of electricity and reduced air conditioning of server rooms. This upgrade assisted the ITS department with replacing the Dell PowerEdge 2650 servers manufactured in 2005 (Dell,2010), with HP C‐Class 'blade servers' made in 2009 (model BL460c G1) (HP‐1, 2009), thereby allowing more energy‐efficient devices to replace the old technology. HEIF contributed $20,000 and the ITS department funded the remainder of the project. The ITS Department continued to invest in virtualizing servers and very few servers now exist on campus which aren't either virtual machines (VMs) or virtualization hosts (VM Cluster Nodes).
